When the company itself is for sale

Selling a data company? Value the financial dataset first

Updated

A buyer for a financial data company is buying the collection and the right to keep licensing it, so what the company owns outright sets the price.

Describe your financial dataset Statements, fundamentals, prices, filings parsed into tables: say what you hold, where it came from and how many years it covers, and we read it against the terms and rules on this site.

Owned, licensed in, or public

Split the dataset three ways before talking to anyone: what the company gathered itself, what it holds under an exchange or vendor licence, and what it took from public filings. Only the first is clearly the company's to transfer.

What survives the sale

Under regulation 14 of the UK database regulations, the maker of a database is whoever took the initiative in obtaining, verifying or presenting its contents and assumed the risk of that investment. A buyer will want to see that this was the company, and will read the licence of every feed it relied on.

Data a closing or selling company still holds

If the company is closing or being sold, read what the law protects in a financial dataset before you name a price for its statements and price histories.
